Hi parents!
Today we began our Daily 5 (or 6) Literacy Centres, following the Daily 5 model. We will be rotating every day through one or two centres each, for a total of six centres (or more) weekly. These centres include: Reading to Self, Reading to Others, Listening to Reading, Word Work, Writing, and Teacher Guided Reading. Your child will have an opportunity to share their Book Bag readings at our Guided Reading meetings, in addition to our specific lessons for the week.
This week, we are experimenting with different ways to gain practice with our writing, including writing with rice (like an Etch-a-Sketch!) and building sentences with magnets. We are also using our Science textbook, La Croissance des animaux, as a guide for our writing topics.
Continuing on our Science unit, we will be writing short "devinettes". We are working on identifying characteristics which make each animal species unique. We will choose one animal and give our classmates clues with hints about our unique features. Stay tuned for updates tomorrow!
Finally, we spent our math time today getting warmed up with counting money amounts up to 100 cents. We practised writing money amounts as $0.00 or as 0¢ ($0.99 or 99¢). We brainstormed with our groups all the different ways that we can make and represent one dollar...and the results were amazing! This week we will continue with counting and estimating money amounts, and continuing into using coins to represent fractions.
