Ice Cream!...Math

30 September 2015

Hello!

We were working away at counting money amounts today, in the most delicious way possible. We visited our Room 128 ice cream parlour, and chose a selection of ice cream flavours; each with their own math challenge. We chose some simple ice cream scoops, such as vanilla and strawberry (white and pink :) ) and we pushed ourselves to try some more exquisite flavours that asked us to add and subtract numbers under 99¢, and even more decadent math challenges with chocolate amounts up to $9.99. It was a frenzy of choosing our ice cream scoops and counting up the total! We even had a contest to see who could make the most expensive ice cream cone with five scoops! We used our money manipulative to represent the money amounts, as well. We will continue to look at money coins for the rest of the week in terms of fractions (parts of a dollar).

We also continued on with our Literacy Centres today, and we are doing a great job learning about teamwork and leadership!

Agendas:
-$2.00 donations for Terry Fox day are greatly appreciated!
-Tomorrow is our first pizza day! Please remember to still bring morning/afternoon snacks and drinks for the day!

Hello parents,

Today, we had our kickoff assembly for our Terry Fox run on Friday. Thank you to those who have already brought in your $2 to participate! We watched a video about Terry and his work at our assembly, and will be discussing more about Terry Fox throughout the week.

In math, we started working on counting and estimating money with piggy banks, and we will be working with coins again tomorrow in some hands-on creative ways! Stay tuned for pictures tomorrow!

In Science, we got to work with our "devinettes" guessing games about animals. We will be posting photos tomorrow!

Finally, we made our first trip to the library today for our first book exchange. A note to former Mother Teresa parents: we will not be using library bags at St. Patrick, so we have discussed being extra responsible with our precious books! We will exchange our books every Day 2 (Tuesdays, for now), but students can always return books from home at any time and can go to free book exchange at several points throughout the week.

Merci!

Hi parents!

Today we began our Daily 5 (or 6) Literacy Centres, following the Daily 5 model. We will be rotating every day through one or two centres each, for a total of six centres (or more) weekly. These centres include: Reading to Self, Reading to Others, Listening to Reading, Word Work, Writing, and Teacher Guided Reading. Your child will have an opportunity to share their Book Bag readings at our Guided Reading meetings, in addition to our specific lessons for the week.

This week, we are experimenting with different ways to gain practice with our writing, including writing with rice (like an Etch-a-Sketch!) and building sentences with magnets. We are also using our Science textbook, La Croissance des animaux, as a guide for our writing topics.

Continuing on our Science unit, we will be writing short "devinettes". We are working on identifying characteristics which make each animal species unique. We will choose one animal and give our classmates clues with hints about our unique features. Stay tuned for updates tomorrow!

Finally, we spent our math time today getting warmed up with counting money amounts up to 100 cents. We practised writing money amounts as $0.00 or as 0¢ ($0.99 or 99¢). We brainstormed with our groups all the different ways that we can make and represent one dollar...and the results were amazing! This week we will continue with counting and estimating money amounts, and continuing into using coins to represent fractions.

Here is our group work up in our hallway! If you would like an extra copy of our coins for extra practice at home, you can find it {HERE}!

Nous sommes le vendredi 25 Septembre

Hello parents!

Zoologists and animals working together :)
Thank you so much to all who attended last night's Building Community night! We had so much fun joining together as a St. Patrick community to celebrate all of the awesome things that your children are doing! We hope you enjoyed seeing our little class! We have finished a busy week going on safari as zoologists studying animals and as mathematicians counting big numbers! Next week we will be moving on with learning about conserving animal habitats, counting money and fractions, as well as starting our Reading Centres (Les Ateliers).
A good zoologist needs a safari Jeep!

Today, we played a math game called 1-200 (Un à deux-cent), and it got quite competitive! To play, you need one piece of paper per person, as well as one die and pencil for the group. Going around the circle clockwise, the player that rolls a "1" (or any other chosen number) first grabs the pencil and starts writing every number from one to two hundred. Meanwhile, everyone else is going around clockwise to roll as quickly as possible, and if another player rolls a "1", he/she grabs the pencil away and starts writing their own list. When your turn to write comes around again (which it does not always, by chance, as we learned today), you continue your list up to two hundred from where you left off. The first player to have completed their list to two hundred is the winner! We will continue this game throughout the year as practice with larger numbers, counting up/down, counting by multiples of 2/5, etc.

Today, we also celebrated 400 years of French presence in Ontario with our Fête franco-ontarien! We all wore green and white (the colours of the flag) and made a big "400" on the school field with every St. Patrick student! Finally, we raised the Franco-ontarien flag at our school and celebrated with face painting and a traditional franco-ontarien sweet treat!

Agendas:
-Some students have homework for Madame Holmes, where they are to discuss your home's emergency exits, in case of fire, if they do not already know.

-Our weekly newsletter is coming home today and you can also download a copy {HERE}. Thank you to those who return the Learning Reflection page on Monday!

-Everyone who came last night started their Sac de Lecture/ Book Bags with French books to read at home. It is important for students to read for 20 minutes per day. You can return the book when completed (at whatever pace is comfortable for your child), and choose a new one. We will use these books frequently for our Small Group reading sessions, so your child may wish to keep their book in their agenda bags. You can find a copy of our Book Bag tracking page {HERE}!

HAVE A GREAT WEEKEND!

23 September 2015

Dear parents,

We are so excited to welcome you to Room 128 tomorrow! We have been working throughout the month of September, and we cannot wait to show off our awesome learning!

Dinner will be starting at 5:30. Today we have sent home tickets for those who sent in their money envelopes by the deadline. These tickets must come with you to pick up your dinner!

We will all be gathering from 6:00 – 6:30 in the gym for a prayer and some words from our principals.  Our classrooms will then be open until approximately 7:15 where your child can show you around our class, and to show off his/her work.

We look forward to seeing you all!

Eric Carle's Art Studio...Room 128!

Hello parents!

We were hard at work today on the artistic component of our Very Hungry Caterpillar/ La Chenille qui fait des trous writing projects! We studied the illustrations in Eric Carle's most celebrated books, and looked for mathematical patterns within his paintings. We are following in his footsteps and today we created beautiful paper using mixes of colours; each with its own unique fingerprint that matches the artists' personalities in patterns and textures. Stay tuned for more updates tomorrow!

Agendas:
-October pizza money *Please send me a message through the Class Dojo app if you would like another copy!*

Writers’ Workshop!

Hello parents,

Today we were hard at work on our first writing project of the year: La Chenille qui fait des trous. We have been using this story to guide our learning of skip counting by 2’s, 5’s and 10’s, as well as a review of writing modelled sentences. Today we started by disussing our Learning Goals (Les buts d’apprentissage), where we learned that our writing project will require us to write a story, following the model of The Very Hungry Caterpillar, and we will use our own counting knowledge and creativity to decide what our caterpillars eat, and in quantities that match our counting pattern. Some students enjoyed challenging themselves with more complex counting (by 3, by 6, 20, etc.), and even counting backwards! We will have these projects (and a fun little extra!) ready to show you all on Thursday for our Parents’ Night!

FIRST COMMUNION INFORMATION
Attached you will also find a link to the St. Francis de Sales parish information for First Communion (that was sent home during the first week of school). Please be sure to contact the parish office ASAP with the paperwork that you can find {HERE}. Please note that this page and money are not to be returned to the school.

Agendas:
-Pizza orders due this week
-We are going to the Book Fair tomorrow, if you wish to send your child with some spending money (Or you can also visit with your child on Thursday night!)

-Building Community Night (Thursday) dinner order envelopes are due tomorrow!
