Hello parents!

Today our bright scientific minds were hard at work! We spent a day of scientific exploration that used our skills in Science (liquids/solids, changes in matter), Math (mass and capacity of containers) and French reading, writing and oral communication.

We began our day with a mystery recipe! We discussed the importance of following a recipe in order, and preparing all materials ahead of time. We read this recipe below in French, and tried to make a hypothesis (a scientist's educated guess) about what our final product might look like, feel like, taste like, etc. We used this recipe that you can recreate at home (we doubled the original recipe as part of our math work):

Materials:
-two bowls
-3/4 cup of cold water
-1/2 cup hot water
-1 cup white liquid glue
-1 tsp Borax (*Let me know if you would like some Borax to make this at home...We have A LOT left over! :) )
-5-10 drops of food colouring

Instructions:
-Absorb the Borax and hot water in one bowl
-Stir the cold water, glue and food colouring in a separate bowl to desired colour
-Stir together the contents of both bowls *and enjoy the magic happening!
-Drain off the excess water
-Store slime in a plastic bag, and it will last up to a week.

We were a little grossed out by the final product...but very surprised to see that the two liquids came together to form a solid! We described it as squishy, slimy, gooey...but also AWESOME!

Later on in our Learning Centres, we dressed up in our hazmat safety gear and got to work! We wrote about liquids and solids in our Scribble Stories...
...We examined household product bottles for safety warnings...
We mixed oil, water, food colouring (and of course, lots of sparkles!) to make lava lamps! We examined how two liquids can have different masses and separate. Of course, we added our own warning labels to warn others of our biohazard creations!
We also read books about recipes and food production to see how different foods are created in careful steps, combining liquids and solids.
We had an awesome day of learning...and cleaning up glitter... and we will continue with mass and capacity in Math this week!
