Hello parents!

Agendas:
-November pizza money due tomorrow

We had an awesome day of French creative writing! We are working on publishing stories about Halloween, and we will go through the editing process to publish our work for our Authors' Tea competition coming up! We wrote some spooky, silly and scary stories and we will share them tomorrow when we are all dressed up in our costumes!

We also continued our work today on our Canard ou lapin story. You can read the book below:

Happy Wednesday!

Your child received a pink form today to schedule your Progress Report Card interview. Please complete the form and return it ASAP to get your desired time. You can also send me a message via the Class Dojo app to schedule your time from home! We also received a white letter outlining our safety procedures for Halloween on Friday. We are not permitted to wear masks (hoods and hats that do not cover the face are allowed), nor will we bring accessories such as wands or swords. Students are responsible for any costume pieces that may be lost or damaged.

Today we put our artistic talents to work as we graphed our results from yesterday's Halloween surveys. We began the day looking at the FSL Homework Toolbox webpage to see examples of various bar graphs, pictographs, pie charts, etc. We discussed what we can and cannot learn from a graph of data. Take a look at some examples below:

How many students are in groupe 1?

Why is it sometimes easier to use percentages instead of the actual number?
Do we know which was more popular among the boys and girls?

What is the order of these sports from least to most popular?

How many girls like bananas? How many boys like oranges?

And here are just a few examples of our awesome work!

Hello parents,

Today we began our Halloween survey projects! We learned how to create a survey question with limited responses (3-5), and mingled around the class speaking in French with our classmates. We will be transferring our data tomorrow into creative Halloween pictographs!

Please note that tomorrow you will receive your Parent Interview scheduling form in anticipation of our Progress Report Cards coming home on November 9th. Please return the completed form as soon as possible, or you can send me a message through Class Dojo mobile app to schedule your time slot instantly! We will be doing interviews the week of November 9th to 13th, but we can always schedule another time if that does not work. Please let me know if you would like separate parent interviews as well!

Agendas:

-Return any late fundraising money and chocolate
-pizza orders for November

Hello parents,

Today we started our new Data Management unit in math, learning about conducting serveys, organizing data into graphs and tables, and interpreting results. We began our day with a closed/limited survey (given only a few choices), and created a table with a visual representation of our answers. We looked at how we can read our data by different attributes (total students, or boys vs. girls). We also discussed how secret voting and public voting can sway results!

Next, we worked on organizing data with an introduction to our Interactive Notebooks. This is a hands-on way of showing our learning, in a more permanent way. We made pockets for different categories, and used our addition and subtraction answers as the data that we organize. We will use interactive notebooks throughout the year for review and practice in all subjects.

Hello parents!

We had a great time today performing our Adjective Fashion show for some VIP guests! We all strutted down the catwalk and used our best superstar voices to talk about ourselves with adjectives. We worked very hard to find some very creative adjectives, which will expand our vocabulary in all further literacy work. Next week, we will have a focus on fictional reading and writing, with a Halloween twist! Stay tuned for updates!

{HERE} you can find a copy of our weekend newsletter!

Agendas:
-All fundraising money and unsold chocolate bars are due on Monday! We will enjoy some exciting rewards and prizes next week!

Hello parents!

Today we had an awesome day of active learning! We spent the morning learning about monsters with our song "Si tu es un monster affreux" (which you can find {HERE} on YouTube). We also read the book, Crankenstein, and used these two books to get us talking about adjectives in French (scary, mean, angry, etc.). We will be making our own monsters tomorrow, and students will have the choice of using their monster or their own clothing on Thursday to present at our "Adjective Fashion Show"!

Dr. Mathématique ready for word problem surgery!
We also dove into word problems, and we learned that word problems are helpful because they prepare us for "real-life" math that we do every day. We talked about how surgeons are great problem solvers because they diagnose a problem, take the problem apart (with surgery...or math calculations), and sew the patient back together (with a concluding full sentence that answers the original question).  We got lots of practice with word problems in our Learning Centres today, and we suited up as surgeons to tackle the most tricky word problems! We had a great time 'walking the walk' of surgeons and applying our math problem solving skills!
Dr. Mathématique's patient for today was a geometry word problem!
Guided steps for solving word problems. They are laminated to encourage us to learn from errors!
Using a stethoscope to find the essential question of our word problem!
Math surgeons hard at work!

We also played a new game today, called "Le totale de vous", similar to the popular Headbandz game. In groups of three, we took turns being the caller, and the other two players had a headband around his/her head. The headband players then drew a card and placed it in their headband without seeing it, and the caller told both players the total of both numbers added together. Each player must then shout out what they think their number is, knowing only the other player's number, and the final total. This was great practice for our missing addend addition!

Agendas:
-Please bring in any remaining chocolate bar money! You have until next Monday to return, but some exciting prizes are coming tomorrow for those who are ready with their money tomorrow!
-November pizza orders

Hi parents,

I would like to start by saying that we have tried out some of our student logins for the LaunchPad website (information in a post from last week below), and they have all required AD\ before the username, if anyone has already tried at home. This may be something that is only needed on school computers, so please verify if you need it or not at home. Please send me a note of you would like your child's login information.

We were hard at work this week learning about adjectives, in preparation for our Adjective Fashion Show this Thursday. We will be describing our clothing in a contest for the most fancy, jazzy descriptions! If there is anything special you would like to wear for Thursday, feel free to bring it on Tuesday or Wednesday to safely store in the class and be ready!

We also worked hard on a team challenge with 3-D geometric nets! We worked as a team to create a full-size soccer ball out of hexagons and pentagons! We will be continuing this week with 3-D skeleton shapes!

Agendas:
-Fundraising money- please bring it in ASAP! We are so close to our goal!
-November pizza orders
-Book Bag Reading

Happy Friday!

This week, we worked hard on finding a line of symmetry of a figure...with some very fun results! Yesterday, we made symmetrical versions of our faces, and found that we are not actually as symmetrical as we might think! We cannot post photos of our work online with students' personal images, but they will be coming home on Monday!

Next week, we will be looking at three-dimensional figures, including skeletons and nets of these shapes. We will also be studying adjectives and adverbs, leading up to some exciting Halloween writing!

You can find a copy of our Friday newsletter {HERE}!

Agendas:
-Please return any fundraising money/unsold chocolate ASAP so you can win some amazing prizes!

Hello parents!

Today we continued our work with symmetry, and we had some fun with some online games through our Durham Catholic website. There are many resources that you can find on the Launch Pad web portal for extra practice at home in all subjects. There are also many resources available in French!

Login Passwords (for all JK-Gr 5 students):
The first two letters of first name in uppercase
First two letters of last name in lowercase (for example, Caroline Wilson would be CAwi)
Number 0 + Birthday month (October would be 010)

*To not release personal student information here, please send me a message on Class Dojo or in your child's agenda if you would like me to send you your child's login username.

1) Click on the LaunchPad on the school board website homepage (www.dcdsb.ca)

2) Enter your student login (contact Mme Wilson to receive your username), following the password guide above.
You can use any of the resources in the boxes (As seen above), or click on Grade 2 Carousel to see Grade 2 games and activities for every subject.

Please let me know if you encounter any difficulties!

Hello!

Today we visited the library for a comic drawing workshop! We had a great time learning how to draw comic characters, guided by a professional illustrator! We used this skill later and began exploring the concept of symmetry in math. We drew half of an image and then switched with a partner, who then drew the mirror-image side.

We will be looking at shapes with lines of symmetry, and building our own symmetrical figures. We will be using miras this week to make some beautiful masterpieces! Be sure to check our class Instagram @laclassedemmewilson on Thursday!

Agendas:
-Anyone who wishes to purchase a comic drawing guide book may return $5.00 tomorrow!
-Please keep up your great fundraising efforts and return money when completed!
-We are going to the library tomorrow for weekly book exchange
