Hello parents,
Our funny little elf, Glaçon sure kept himself busy over the weekend while we were away! He showed us this morning some interesting "sELFies"...
Today we had a very important visit from our local Firefighters, who talked to us about fire prevention and emergency procedures. Some students from our class demonstrated for the other classes how to "Stop, drop, and roll" and how to crawl below smoke and check for hot door knobs. We will continue these discussions throughout the year with our Health and Social Studies units.
In math, we have been studying patterns in all their many forms. Today we looked at growing and shrinking patterns, and got creative with our Problem of the Week. We created a Christmas tree, with each of us tracing out four hands. We then arranged them into a pattern of one hand on the top, and then each row down growing by two (1, 3, 5, 7...), until we had eight rows with a final length of 15 hands. We then used multiplication (repeated addition) to figure out the total of our hands (18 people, 4 hands = 18 x 4 or 18 + 18 + 18 + 18 = 72). We also used our growing pattern to figure out that the ninth and tenth imaginary rows would have 17 and 19 hands respectively.
We used a Hundreds chart today to look at the many patterns that exist. We also played a great game called Number Snakes, where we guess the pattern of numbers, relative to other numbers in the Hundreds charts. We will be continuing to play with these in our Math Centres this week.

We also learned about The Beatitudes today, and how we can adjust our own attitudes to help ourselves be happier and more kind to others. We used these fun YouTube videos to help us understand the word "Blessed", which you can watch {HERE} and {HERE}!
