Hello parents!

*Please return any outstanding library books by tomorrow!

We had a very busy day of Advent learning, Literacy and Math centres, and of course, our Christmas concert! We had a wonderful morning performing in front of our St. Patrick student community! We sang our song, Douce Nuit (Silent Night) beautifully, and many other classes commented on how professional and poised we looked up on stage :) Excellent work!

Tomorrow is Red and Green Day at St. Patrick, but our class voted to do a pyjama day instead, so we have the option of participating in either celebration, or perhaps combining both? We did discuss, however, that the stuffed animals, blankets and pillows may be best left at home, just to keep them safe and clean. We will have a small class celebration in the afternoon to wrap up our hard work for 2015. Students may bring in a movie (DVD format only) that is G-rated, and that comes with a French version.

Tomorrow, your child will come home with some levelled readers to enjoy over the Christmas holidays to keep up our French reading while at home.

I'm Agendas:

-Pizza money for January due Wednesday
-Please return any of last week's library books as soon as possible

Hello parents!

Our Christmas concert is on Thursday (just for the other classes to watch, unfortunately),and we continued our practice with Douce Nuit (Silent Night), and you can see all the song lyrics and details in the post below!

Today we were busy with our new learning centres! We are using the book, "Où est le flocon de neige?" To learn about prepositions (sur, sous, dans, devant, derrière, and à côté de). This week we will be playing games creating sentences with prepositions, and will work on showing our understanding of sentences with pictures. We will be bringing all our Learning Centres reading and writing work home on Thursday once every student has had a chance to visit each centre!

We began practising our song for our Christmas concert today! So far, the concert will only be performed for St. Patrick students, but we will let you know ASAP if our Primary classes create a parent concert. We will be singing Douce Nuit (Silent Night), and you can find many versions online for practice at home, and we will be using the version from the Fisher-Price "Petit Papa Noël" album, available on iTunes. Click on the photo to the left to see the link to the iTunes store!

Douce Nuit Lyrics:
Douce nuit, Sainte nuit;
Dans les cieux, l'astre luit.
Le mystère annoncé s'accomplit;
Cet enfant sur la paille endormi;
C'est l'amour infini,
C'est l'amour infini.

Saint enfant, doux agneau;
Qu'il est grand! Qu'il est beau!
Entendez résonner les pipeaux;
Des bergers conduisant leurs troupeaux;
Vers son humble berceau,
Vers son humble berceau.

7 December 2015

Hello parents,

Our funny little elf, Glaçon sure kept himself busy over the weekend while we were away! He showed us this morning some interesting "sELFies"...

Today we had a very important visit from our local Firefighters, who talked to us about fire prevention and emergency procedures. Some students from our class demonstrated for the other classes how to "Stop, drop, and roll" and how to crawl below smoke and check for hot door knobs. We will continue these discussions throughout the year with our Health and Social Studies units.

In math, we have been studying patterns in all their many forms. Today we looked at growing and shrinking patterns, and got creative with our Problem of the Week. We created a Christmas tree, with each of us tracing out four hands. We then arranged them into a pattern of one hand on the top, and then each row down growing by two (1, 3, 5, 7...), until we had eight rows with a final length of 15 hands. We then used multiplication (repeated addition) to figure out the total of our hands (18 people, 4 hands = 18 x 4 or 18 + 18 + 18 + 18 = 72). We also used our growing pattern to figure out that the ninth and tenth imaginary rows would have 17 and 19 hands respectively.

We used a Hundreds chart today to look at the many patterns that exist. We also played a great game called Number Snakes, where we guess the pattern of numbers, relative to other numbers in the Hundreds charts. We will be continuing to play with these in our Math Centres this week.
You can find the link to the Number snakes example page {HERE}! Be sure to use the Hundreds chart here to check your answers!

We also learned about The Beatitudes today, and how we can adjust our own attitudes to help ourselves be happier and more kind to others. We used these fun YouTube videos to help us understand the word "Blessed", which you can watch {HERE} and {HERE}!

4 December 2015

Hello parents! Happy Friday!

You can find a copy of our newsletter {HERE}!

Today we had a great time celebrating our Catholic virtue of Justice at our assembly. Our December focus will be Hope, and we will work on approaching challenges with positive attitudes, and seeing the good in other people when we are in a conflict.

We have been learning about the Liturgical calendar lately, and today we made our own Liturgical Calendar Wheels. These wheels show us not only the dates and theme colours for each main season (Ordinary Time, Lent, Easter, Advent and Christmas), but we also discussed what we do in each season. For example, we use the times of Lent and Advent to prepare our hearts and minds for the celebrations of Easter and Christmas. We also learned that "Ordinary Time" is not so 'ordinary' after all! This is the exciting time when we get to independently put into practice the lessons that we have learned during the other seasons. This is our chance to 'walk the walk', so to speak, with our actions and words! You will have a chance to review our Liturgical Calendar wheels this weekend for our Learning Reflection.

We finally celebrated our creativity with a little Christmas market today! We have been learning about Christmas traditions around the world, and will be studying Strasbourg, the largest Christmas market next week. We each made holiday decorations to sell yesterday, and today it was a frenzy of buying, selling and advertising! We each had $12.00 to spend, and we had a little competition to see who could make the most profit!

3 December 2015

Hello parents!

Tomorrow is Red & Green Day at St. Patrick! Our class can win a popcorn party if we have the highest percentage of students wearing BOTH colours!

Today we read the Dr. Seuss story of The Sneetches, to talk about diversity in its many forms, and we will have a special focus throughout the Advent season on showing sensitivity to those who are different from us in many ways. You can find a YouTube video of The Sneetches {HERE}!

We were surprised to see Glaçon, our elf was caught playing a math game with our class pet! We are excited to see what he is up to tonight when we are not here!

Today, we were hard at work making Christmas decorations for both our fabulous class tree, and for our Christmas market tomorrow! We will be buying and selling our goods with our math money review, and using our French writing skills with our persuasive advertisements! Stay tuned for more updates tomorrow!

Agendas:
-Tomorrow is the final day for the Christmas Store!
-Friday is Red and Green Day! The class with the most red AND green outfits wins a prize!

Today we found our class elf, Glaçon, up on our projector machine! He watched everything we did and learned along with us! He left us a note to leave him a math question on our desk to keep him busy at night!

Today we looked at repeating patterns, as well as the patterns we see in nature (stripes on animals, snake scale patterns, flower bloom patterns, etc.). We raced around the room to find patterns in Room 128!

Bienvenue, Glaçon!

Today we received a special (freezing cold!) package from the North Pole! Père Noël sent us an elf (un lutin) to watch over our class every day in December! We named our elf Glaçon (icicle), and will track this sneaky elf's shenanigans every day!

Today we also began our Christmas projects with a look at how other countries celebrate Christmas. We will be using our knowledge of Venn diagrams to show similarities and differences! We will continue to study the city of Bethlehem and the countries of China, France, India, and Venezuela!
