Goin’ On A Nature Hunt…

We would like to show you what we have been up to today! We have been working through animal life cycles and examining what a species can do as a baby, and what changes as they grow. Today we continued to look at caterpillars and how they become butterflies as an adult. We went on a nature walk to find items that caterpillars and butterflies use for food and shelter (leaves, flowers, branches, etc.). We then used our nature items to create an artistic display of the butterfly life cycle. We used marshmallows as caterpillar eggs as well as various pasta shapes to show how caterpillars grow and evolve into butterflies.

DIY MATH!

Today, our class worked on creating large numbers (up to 100), and also extended our learning of hundreds, tens and ones (les centaines, les dixaines et les unités) to create numbers up to 999. We used three styrofoam cups to represent each digit from 0-9 as ones, tens and hundreds.

Your child brought his/her cups home tonight to explain to you how we can use these “number generators” as a math tool. We used them in some fun races to create two or three-digit numbers as trivia answers (ex- “How old are you?” (007), “How old will you be in thirty years?” (037)). These are a quick and easy hands-on way that we bring interactive learning to our math program with simple items you probably already have around the home. Can your child identify anything else in your home that he/she could use as a math tool? This will be an ongoing discussion throughout our year. If your child thinks of any creative ideas at home, please let us know and we would love to try it in our class!

Hello parents,

We kicked off our week with a new project today! We will be using our first book study of The Very Hungry Caterpillar, or: "La Chenille qui fait des trous", by Eric Carle. We will be using this story to guide our work of number lines with increasing patterns (counting by 2's, 5's and 10's up to 200), as well as following modelled French sentence writing as we write our own versions of the story later on this week.

Today, we watched the book on video, and we also took a moment to connect this book to our unit of animal life cycles in science with the transformation from caterpillar to butterfly. Your child's homework for tonight is to watch the video with you and explain in English/any other language what is happening in the story and in the butterfly life cycle documentary.

We finished our first week of Grade 2! We have had a fun week making new friends and developing the tools for a solid base for the rest of our year.

Jeudi le 10 Septembre 2015... Our Day on Video!

We have had a busy day today! We were fortunate enough to celebrate our first class birthday so early on in the school year. We had a great time singing and enjoying treats!

In French, we worked on answering simple questions in full sentences. This will be part of our daily writing practice for the entire year.

In Science, we began our first unit about the life cycles of animals (La croissance des animaux/ Growth and Changes in Animals unit from the Ontario Science and Technology curriculum, which you can find {Here}). We discussed how we can sort and classify animals, beyond their species classifications and we sorted animals by size, number of babies born at a time, carnivores/herbivores/omnivores, etc.

In math, we have been discussing what makes a good mathematician. We also talked about math tools and how they help us solve problems. We classified math tools vs. toys and through group discussions, discovered that any object can be used as a math tool, if used correctly!

Silent Puzzles

We also challenged ourselves working in groups with silent puzzles to encourage positive teamwork and problem solving. Every group did a great job and we had lots of fun!

We also continued our Fermez la boîte game and are getting lots of practice with addition! Today in our Mission Possible Math, we worked on addition with missing numbers (ex- 4 + ? = 10) and we also worked on reading French numbers written in words (up to twenty). Further practice will come home on Friday.
