Today is Ash Wednesday! We celebrated with a Liturgy in the gym with Father Gervais from our Parish, and we all received a cross made of ashes on our forehead. We made books in class to learn about Ash Wednesday and Lent, and our homework is to explain to someone at home the importance of Lent, as well as the bad habit that we will give up for Lent, in exchange for a better habit (i.e.- being hopeful instead of complaining, saying compliments instead of laughing at others, helping others at home instead of watching TV, choosing healthy food instead of junk food, etc.).

Today we also began our Subtraction unit in math with some new solving methods. This week, we will be learning new ways to solve subtraction problems. It is always great to see new ways of doing things (regardless of skill level), to appreciate the many ways in which we learn, and to have an extra skill in our solving toolbox.

We began by looking at subtraction problems that require regrouping (where the 'ones' digit (les unités) of the larger number is smaller than the ones digit of the smaller number. For example, with 43-27, we cannot do 3 - 7, so we have to get creative. Today we used the method of stretching (étirer)...
We begin by re-writing 43 as 40 +3, and 27 as 20 +7. The quantities are still the same, but we are now looking at our "tens" digit (les dixaines) as 40 and 20 instead of simply 4 and 2.
Now that the number is stretched out, we can borrow ("emprunter") 10 from the 40, and move it over to the ones column to make the 3 a larger number, from which we can subtract 7.

Once we borrow 10 from 40, the 40 becomes a 30. We then move that 10 over to the ones column, and 3 +10 becomes 13. We also discussed how you can simply put a little "1" to the left of the 3, but this method allows us to see the whole process transparently.

Now that we have 13 in the ones column, we can subtract 13 - 7, which gives us 6. We talked a lot about the importance of keeping everything lined up in the right columns, to avoid any errors.

Next, we can subtract 30 - 20, which gives us 10. We have to be careful to immediately add the "+", so we see the answer as 10 + 6, and not 106!

We can simplify 10 +6 to simply 16.

Et Voilà! We will be looking at some other new way this week, and we will find what works best for us as a learner!

Here are some other examples that we did in class! We will work on becoming more independent with this skill tomorrow!
