Happy Tuesday!

Our Kindness and Bullying Prevention week is the perfect opportunity to explain to you our new challenge: #HappyClassrooms!

We are joining many classes around the world who are looking to show off positive moments of learning and joy within our class every day. There are so many moments every day, but we will decide as a class which photograph best represents our top moment.

Be sure to follow our class instagram account at @laclassedemmewilson and you can also see the online instagram account {HERE}!

Agendas:
-Pizza orders due Friday, February 26th

Today, we began preparing for our February Celebration assembly on Thursday. Our Grade two classes will be leading the school reciting "Je vous salue, Marie" (Hail, Mary). We will also be singing the song "Share a Little Bit of Your Love", and you can find the lyrics below!

Today we also began our first in-depth book study, with "Le Chapeau de M. Zinger" (Mr. Zinger's Hat). We will be using this story as the basis for our vocabulary, reading and writing learning throughout the week. This story has received the TD Reads award, and each student in our class has received his/her own copy that we will take home at the end of our unit! You can see the SafeShare video of our story in French {HERE} and in English {HERE}! You can also read more about the TD Reads award for the story (in French) {HERE}.

Share a Little Bit of Your Love

(Refrain)
Share a little bit of your love, my friends
Share a little bit of your love.
Share a little bit of your love my friends and it’ll
Come back to where it began.

1. And watch it grow, (watch it grow)
Watch it grow (O watch it grow), watch it
Grow to where it touches every land!
Help it grow (help it grow)
Help it grow (O help it grow)
Help it grow by only reachin, ’ reachin’ out to
Someone your hand!!

(REFRAIN)

2. See it shine, (see it shine)
See it shine, (O see it shine)
See it shine on every face where it has been.
Help it shine (help it shine,
Help it shine (O help it shine)
Help it shine on every body, shine on
Every body again!

(REFRAIN)

Agendas:
-HOMEWORK: Finish Ash Wednesday book and read it with someone at home (does not need to be returned to school).
-Please return Report Cards signed! (Page 4 and envelope signed)
-Friday is 100th Day! We are dressing up like we are 100 years old!

Today is Ash Wednesday! We celebrated with a Liturgy in the gym with Father Gervais from our Parish, and we all received a cross made of ashes on our forehead. We made books in class to learn about Ash Wednesday and Lent, and our homework is to explain to someone at home the importance of Lent, as well as the bad habit that we will give up for Lent, in exchange for a better habit (i.e.- being hopeful instead of complaining, saying compliments instead of laughing at others, helping others at home instead of watching TV, choosing healthy food instead of junk food, etc.).

Today we also began our Subtraction unit in math with some new solving methods. This week, we will be learning new ways to solve subtraction problems. It is always great to see new ways of doing things (regardless of skill level), to appreciate the many ways in which we learn, and to have an extra skill in our solving toolbox.

We began by looking at subtraction problems that require regrouping (where the 'ones' digit (les unités) of the larger number is smaller than the ones digit of the smaller number. For example, with 43-27, we cannot do 3 - 7, so we have to get creative. Today we used the method of stretching (étirer)...
We begin by re-writing 43 as 40 +3, and 27 as 20 +7. The quantities are still the same, but we are now looking at our "tens" digit (les dixaines) as 40 and 20 instead of simply 4 and 2.
Now that the number is stretched out, we can borrow ("emprunter") 10 from the 40, and move it over to the ones column to make the 3 a larger number, from which we can subtract 7.

Once we borrow 10 from 40, the 40 becomes a 30. We then move that 10 over to the ones column, and 3 +10 becomes 13. We also discussed how you can simply put a little "1" to the left of the 3, but this method allows us to see the whole process transparently.

Now that we have 13 in the ones column, we can subtract 13 - 7, which gives us 6. We talked a lot about the importance of keeping everything lined up in the right columns, to avoid any errors.

Next, we can subtract 30 - 20, which gives us 10. We have to be careful to immediately add the "+", so we see the answer as 10 + 6, and not 106!

We can simplify 10 +6 to simply 16.

Et Voilà! We will be looking at some other new way this week, and we will find what works best for us as a learner!

Here are some other examples that we did in class! We will work on becoming more independent with this skill tomorrow!

We Agendas:

-Report Card envelope signed and returned (to be used again for June Report Card)
-Please sign and return the form inside the envelope if you would like to meet for an interview to discuss the report card

Today we were consolidating our Probability learning with a hands-on spinner activity. We estimated what our spins would be, and then compared our estimations against the actual outcomes. We then discussed our results using our likelihood unit vocabulary.

Tomorrow, we will transition into our next math unit, which is a review and extension of our two-digit addition and subtraction work, especially with money amounts up to 100 cents. We will be learning some new techniques and creative ways to show our work...especially in preparation for our 100th day on Friday!

3 February 2016

Agendas:

-Warm (and ugly!) sweater day tomorrow!
-Pizza Day tomorrow; bring extra snacks

Today we are getting into the Valentine spirit in Room 128! We are using Valentine's Day vocabulary as the base for our writing this week and next! We will be working in our Learning Centres later this week with Valentine creative writing.

In Math, we began our new Probability unit! We will be using Probability language to describe the likelihood of future events: "impossible, peu probable, possible, probable, certain". We looked at some very popular events where we can use our Probability language! Sadly, our cup did not win big today, but we will track our wins and losses throughout the month of February...hopefully with a win! We are also using the website: rolluptherimtowin.com to test our luck!

-Ugly/tacky sweater day on Thursday

Today we were hard at work on our Continents writing project! We used our mailman book to explain our understanding of our letters from each a friend in each continent, and we also compared similarities and differences between our climates and cultures, using our text-based evidence. We will complete our Social Studies unit this week, and will be gearing up for our next Science unit next week!

1 February 2016

Agendas:
-Tomorrow is the last day to purchase Candy-Grams for 50 cents!
-Please return any overdue library books

Today we spent our morning watching a very informative presentation about bus safety, and we received some important information to take home to share everything we learned with adults. We had a fun afternoon today with Mrs. S., from St. Francis' Parish. We played a game to test our knowledge of the Ten Commandments, and we watched a video called "Johnny's Tears", to learn about the emotional costs of sins, and the "weight" we feel lifted through forgiveness.

We also got ready for one of our culminating tasks for our Global Communities unit. We spent last week reading letters from students in each continent, and now we are using that information in a creative writing piece. We are working on finding text evidence, and using it in our writing. We are also working on comparing and contrasting ways of life. We will complete our "Personnel de la Poste" tomorrow!

We are also working on self-evaluations throughout Term 2, and we will be tracking our successes and progress independently with this project. This will help us to be aware of our Success Criteria as we work in the future!
