Agendas:

-Popcorn/cotton candy orders
-See yellow letter from the office re: Catholic Education Week events
-RSVP for our play performance on Wednesday, May 4th!

Today, we were excited to get our hands on our newest addition to our class: Osmo! This game system attaches to our class iPad, which we can use to supplement and assess our French and Math learning. Here is a quick overview of the games we played today. You will see more at our upcoming Math Night in May!

This is the Numéros/Numbers game, where we can use dice tiles or numerical digit tiles to represent number totals in addition/subtraction/counting games. We use the dice tiles to create the number shown, and you can see what it looks like up on our big screen!

Here is our Mots/Words game. Here we see an image, and rearrange the letter tiles or fill  in missing letters to spell our High Frequency vocabulary words. Today we used the French demo words, and will continue next week with specific words that our class is working on, as it is completely customizable!
Finally here is the most popular game in our class: Newton! This is a problem solving skill game where we can use drawings on a white board, or our hands (as seen on the big screen below) to create pathways for objects aiming for a target. This gets our minds thinking quickly!

We look forward to showing you in the future how we use these and other tools to enhance our learning. Stay tuned!

-popcorn and cotton candy order forms
-pizza orders due tomorrow
-Please let Mme Wilson know how many adults from your family will be coming to our play performance next Wednesday, May 4th!

Today we began our math unit working with relative location and movement. We began with a quick game to recall our prepositions...and you can see that we got a little competitive! Next we made a game of creating a hidden picture with shapes (or you can use any objects at home), and then using mathematical language in French to describe our image, and our friends on the other side of the barrier had to create the same image, with only our verbal instructions to help!

We are working on a case study about how to come back from a negative situation after an argument to restore a positive relationship.

-May pizza orders went home today and are due on April 28th

Today we were excited to get right down to work with our fairy tale writing! We began by brainstorming as a class the types of characters and settings that we expect to see in a fairy tale. We also discussed the patterns of things coming in 3's and 7's in fairy tales (three little pigs, goldilocks and the three bears, seven dwarves, etc.). Check out our planning work below! Tomorrow we will examine the concept of good versus evil in fairy tales, and will create our inciting incident, story events and story solution!
Today we also began our Altar display for our Earth Day liturgy on Friday! Awesome recycled art!

We had a fabulous day sailing the high seas with a celebration of our pirate literary writing unit! We used our story of Comment Je Suis devenu pirate (How I became a pirate) by Melinda Long as a mentor text to develop a story beginning, middle and conclusion. We enjoyed using our creativity with crafty pirate vocabulary to write our own three-paragraph stories.  Check out our unbelievable work!

Reading with a pirate telescope
Pirate treasure chests full of addition and subtraction problems!
And then a sword fight broke out over a math game race!
Arranging under-the-sea puzzles, using our math concepts of size relations and proportions

4 April 2016

Agendas:

-Wacky Hair Day tomorrow
-Lunch Lady orders (can be completed online)

Today we began our Write On writing unit, based on the book, How I Became A Pirate, by Melinda Long (Comment je suis devenu pirate). We are using this (and other pirate-themed fictional stories) as a mentor text for our fictional writing about, what else? PIRATES!
We discussed how the story used creative imagery and has a clear beginning, middle and ending. Today we began our story planning by defining our characters and setting. Tomorrow, we will work on our inciting action (problem), and how the solution of the problem will develop. We met with our writing conference partners, to make sure that we were on the right track, and to offer our helpful ideas and insights. What a great way to kick off our week! We will conclude our unit next Thursday with a pirate themed day...Stay tuned!
