We have a very busy week ahead of us! On Wednesday, we will participate in our school-wide Jump Rope for Heart skipping event. Be sure to have your pledge forms returned on time to receive your prizes!
Our focus for next week in our Math program will be working with relationships in measurement, including time (weeks, months, comparing timed events), mass and capacity of familiar containers, and comparing relative sizes of two- and three-dimensional objects.
From our Ontario curriculum, we will:
- Compare and order a collection of objects by mass and/or capacity using
non-standard units.
- Determine, through investigation, the relationship between days and weeks
and between months and years.
- Describe, through investigation, the relationship between the size of the unit area and the number of units needed to cover a surface.
These topics are great to extend at home, and we will be sending home some ideas to continue the conversations in real-life contexts.
In our French language program, we will be taking on two projects within the month of May. Each week, we will have 3-4 students conducting "Genius Hour" independent research 'passion projects'. Students have the freedom to research any topic of interest (a person, historical event, explore how something works, invent something new, etc.), and they will spend Monday and Tuesday of their week collecting information using our class books, iPads and computers. On the Wednesday and Thursday, they will develop their presentation to the class in any way that best showcases their learning and personal styles. This may be a video, poster presentation, creating an activity for the class, written report, dramatic presentation, 'artifact box', scrapbook, etc. Finally on the Friday, we will have a chance to teach the rest of the class about our topic, using French speaking, listening, reading and writing skills. You will receive a more comprehensive schedule and explanation next week. For the week of May 9-13th, our Geniuses will be CW, JY and LM. We can't wait to get started!
We are also moving into our non-fiction/persuasive writing unit with our French reading and writing. We will be studying WHALES! We will connect this to our new Science unit, Air and Water. Here are the "Big Ideas" from our Ontario Science curriculum:

assess ways in which the actions of humans have an impact on the quality of air and water,
and ways in which the quality of air and water has an impact on living things;

investigate the characteristics of air and water and the visible/invisible effects of and
changes to air and/or water in the environment;

demonstrate an understanding of the ways in which air and water are used by living
things to help them meet their basic needs.
We will use our non-fiction learning of whales and how they interact with the air and water of their environment. We will study human impacts on natural ocean environments, and develop an expository essay about whale populations, and what can be done to improve their habitats. We will also link our learning to our Visual Arts and Dramatic arts curriculum through our learning of the water cycle and air quality testing.
