Jeudi le 10 Septembre 2015... Our Day on Video!

We have had a busy day today! We were fortunate enough to celebrate our first class birthday so early on in the school year. We had a great time singing and enjoying treats!

In French, we worked on answering simple questions in full sentences. This will be part of our daily writing practice for the entire year.

In Science, we began our first unit about the life cycles of animals (La croissance des animaux/ Growth and Changes in Animals unit from the Ontario Science and Technology curriculum, which you can find {Here}). We discussed how we can sort and classify animals, beyond their species classifications and we sorted animals by size, number of babies born at a time, carnivores/herbivores/omnivores, etc.

In math, we have been discussing what makes a good mathematician. We also talked about math tools and how they help us solve problems. We classified math tools vs. toys and through group discussions, discovered that any object can be used as a math tool, if used correctly!

Silent Puzzles

We also challenged ourselves working in groups with silent puzzles to encourage positive teamwork and problem solving. Every group did a great job and we had lots of fun!

We also continued our Fermez la boîte game and are getting lots of practice with addition! Today in our Mission Possible Math, we worked on addition with missing numbers (ex- 4 + ? = 10) and we also worked on reading French numbers written in words (up to twenty). Further practice will come home on Friday.

Fermez la boîte!

Today, our class started a new game called "Fermez la boîte", a version of the popular game, Shut The Box. We are using this as practice using number lines (which is our main focus for September), as well as addition facts and making big numbers out of two smaller numbers. Game Materials:

-Number line with the numbers 1 to 12

-Two dice

First, we made a number line on our board with the numbers 1 to 12. The goal of our game is to cross off all of the numbers, or as many as possible. The rules are that you can only use a number that is available, since a crossed-off number cannot be reused.

We start with our number line that looks like this…

We roll our two dice, and imagine our dice look like this. With a 4 and a 4, our total number we are working with is 8.

From our number line, we can cross off 8, 1 and 7, 6 and 2 and 5 and 3. Our remaining numbers to work with for our next roll are 9, 10, 11 and 12

In our next roll, imagine we roll a 6 and 4, giving us a total of 10. We can then cross off 10, but all other combinations that make 10 are already used.

If we try to roll again, imagine we roll a 3 and a 2, which gives us 5. Since 5 and all other combinations that make 5 are used up, our turn is done. We now add up all remaining numbers to find our total score

9 + 11 + 12 = 32

We want to get as LOW a final score as possible, which would be zero if we are able to cross of every number.

We are doing this game as a whole class, and will be expaning to playing in a 4-player game, where the person with the lowest score wins.
