Happy Friday!

You can find your copy of our weekly newsletter {HERE}

We have a very busy week coming up! Parents are welcome to join us for our end of the year Mass at St. Francis de Sales parish on Wednesday, June 15th at 9:30! Our Grade 2 and Grade 8 students will receive First Communion certificates in a celebration with the whole school. Don't forget that we also have our trip to Ripley's Aquarium on Thursday, June 16th. You will find a green note stapled into your child's agenda on Monday, June 13th with important guidelines and reminders.

*Parent volunteers for Thursday: I will be in touch with you on Monday to confirm and give more details.

Any other parents are welcome to join us at the Aquarium (next to the Rogers Centre/Union Station in Toronto), and it would be the regular admission price.

Your child also received today a package attached to our newsletter with information about our at-home project that is due Friday, June 17th. Students are to track their household water usage for five days (I recommend you start on Saturday, June 11th to have your five days, plus extra time to complete the project). The project will be to assess your family's water usage (where you already save and where you use water the most), and create a persuasive poster to teach the class about what we should be doing to improve our water conservation efforts at home.

Agendas:
-Tomorrow we will have "Forts and Flashlights" Day, to celebrate reaching our class fundraising goal of $100! We surpassed this goal today, and are halfway to our $250 goal, which will get us a special treat from Mme Jackson's class! Tomorrow, students can bring in (old, not fancy) sheets and blankets to make forts out of our desk groups, and we can bring in flashlights to read in the dark in our creative caves!

Agendas:
-please return any late Annie play permission forms and $4.00 ASAP
-Subway orders

Today we used our knowledge of air and water to create les Droles de têtes! We are making our personalized pots with cat grass, which should grow to full size within two weeks! We discussed the conditions necessary for plants to grow, and we decided that they needed both clean air and water, as well as sunlight. In addition to our personal pots, we made experimental pots, each with a different condition, and we will track and compare their growth:
-with sunlight and water
-with sunlight but no water
-with water but no sunlight
-no sunlight and no water

 Check out our great artistic and scientific work!

-Please RSVP to our St. Patrick Family Math Night on Tuesday, May 10th at 6:30. There will be a seminar for parents in the gym, followed by activities in classrooms. Come check out our awesome little class and all the work they have done to help prepare for this night!
-Jump Rope for Heart pledge forms returned

You can find a copy of our newsletter {HERE}

We have a very busy week ahead of us! On Wednesday, we will participate in our school-wide Jump Rope for Heart skipping event. Be sure to have your pledge forms returned on time to receive your prizes!

Our focus for next week in our Math program will be working with relationships in measurement, including time (weeks, months, comparing timed events), mass and capacity of familiar containers,  and comparing relative sizes of two- and three-dimensional objects.

From our Ontario curriculum, we will:
-  Compare and order a collection of objects by mass and/or capacity using non-standard units.
-  Determine, through investigation, the relationship between days and weeks and between months and years.
-  Describe, through investigation, the relationship between the size of the unit area and the number of units needed to cover a surface.

These topics are great to extend at home, and we will be sending home some ideas to continue the conversations in real-life contexts.

In our French language program, we will be taking on two projects within the month of May. Each week, we will have 3-4 students conducting "Genius Hour" independent research 'passion projects'. Students have the freedom to research any topic of interest (a person, historical event, explore how something works, invent something new, etc.), and they will spend Monday and Tuesday of their week collecting information using our class books, iPads and computers. On the Wednesday and Thursday, they will develop their presentation to the class in any way that best showcases their learning and personal styles. This may be a video, poster presentation, creating an activity for the class, written report, dramatic presentation, 'artifact box', scrapbook, etc. Finally on the Friday, we will have a chance to teach the rest of the class about our topic, using French speaking, listening, reading and writing skills. You will receive a more comprehensive schedule and explanation next week. For the week of May 9-13th, our Geniuses will be CW, JY and LM. We can't wait to get started!

We are also moving into our non-fiction/persuasive writing unit with our French reading and writing. We will be studying WHALES! We will connect this to our new Science unit, Air and Water. Here are the "Big Ideas" from our Ontario Science curriculum:

  1. assess ways in which the actions of humans have an impact on the quality of air and water, and ways in which the quality of air and water has an impact on living things;
  2. investigate the characteristics of air and water and the visible/invisible effects of and changes to air and/or water in the environment;
  3. demonstrate an understanding of the ways in which air and water are used by living things to help them meet their basic needs.
We will use our non-fiction learning of whales and how they interact with the air and water of their environment. We will study human impacts on natural ocean environments, and develop an expository essay about whale populations, and what can be done to improve their habitats. We will also link our learning to our Visual Arts and Dramatic arts curriculum through our learning of the water cycle and air quality testing.

To get us started, if you would like some extra practice at home, here is a copy of a level "O" printable book that we will use in class along with a comprehension activity: {DES BALEINES BOOK} {DES BALEINES WORKSHEET}. Here is a copy of a level "J" book and activity as well: {LES ANIMAUX MARINS BOOK}, {LES ANIMAUX MARINS WORKSHEET}.
